Parchment

Trade Names: Pergamano, Pergacraft, Parchcraft Australia

Believed to be of Spanish origin but has roots in the East and most ares of Europe, probably to decorate religious books and book binding.

Parchment was originally made in Turkey in a town called Pergamanum as a substitute for papyrus. In its original form it is the tanned skins of sheep, goats and fowl and used as a surface for writing and painting. Today a man made substitute, called parchment paper, is used and is available in several weights and colours.

The craft was brought to England in 1991 by Janet Wilson who has also written books and produced patterns and tools.

The most important aspects of Parchment craft are tracing, colouring, embossing, perforating and cutting. All the patterns could be adapted to suit your personal style and needs including greeting cards, pictures, decorations and novelties.
